If you are looking for information on how to get rid of drain flies, you must have had enough of them buzzing on your face. These little insects will not harm you but they can drive you crazy. Drain flies, also known as sewer gnats, sink flies or filter flies are eight inches long. They usually feed on organic material and organic waste. Drain flies love moisture which explains the importance of draining water and keeping surfaces dry. Often, you will find them on drains and sinks in the kitchen and the bathroom. While drain flies are not harmful and do not bite people, they can make you feel uncomfortable.

How to identify drain flies

Identifying a drain flies’ infestation is not difficult. They are usually small in size, about 1.5-5.5mm. Drain flies appear in grey or light brown color and their wings have a light color. Their bodies are covered with long hair. Drain flies rest on the walls of the sinks, sewers, and septic tanks.  When extermination is not done within a short time, the population of drain flies can increase quickly. Notably, a female lays about 100 eggs once. These eggs hatch within two days and soon mature into flies. Additionally, drain flies only fly for a very short distance.

There are several tiny insects that could crowd your kitchen or bathroom. To verify that it is a drain fly infestation, cover the top of the drains with tape overnight. If you find insects stuck on the tape, then drain flies are the ones that have been making your kitchen and bathroom inhabitable.

Below are a few tips on how to get rid of drain flies;

  • Scrape the sides of the drain

One of the best ways to get rid of drain flies is to scrape the sides of the drains in your kitchen and bathroom. You can do this by using a knife. Remember, the eggs of drain flies breed on such surfaces. If left unattended, the breeding cycle will continue and soon the population of these insects will be out of control. After scrapping off, dispose of the sludge outside your house immediately.

  • Kill adult drain flies

To get rid of drain flies, you must also kill the adult ones.

  1. Mix equal parts of white vinegar, sugar, and water in a bowl.  Add 10 drops of dishwashing soap into the solution.  Leave that mixture in a bowl in or around the sink. The drain flies will be attracted to it and they will drown and die.
  2. Fill a small bowl with ¼ cup apple cider vinegar. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap. Use a toothpick to poke holes in the wrap. The drain flies will get into the bowl but will not get out.
  3. By carrying out DIY, Fendona 60 SC would be a superior and quicker insecticide to knock down adult drain flies.

  • Use a metal pipe brush

To completely get rid of drain flies, you must make it difficult for them to survive.  Drain flies are usually attracted to the organic material that covers the inner side of the pipes.  As such, push a metal pipe brush on the pipes connecting to your drain. Move this brush back and forth until you ensure that all the dirt and sludge are removed.  You can then insert a plumbing snake to ensure that the inner part of the pipes is clean. In case you find this difficult, you can always book the services of a trained fly control expert.

Super Septic is a proprietary blend of bacteria selected for their ability to degrade organic waste in drains, pit latrines, and septic tanks. A proper application will get rid of drain flies within two days as they can break down all the clogged organic material acting as drain fly habitats.

  • Keep the drain flies away

After applying various measures to get rid of drain flies, you need to ensure that they do not become a bother anymore.  To keep these insects away, pour a mixture of vinegar, baking soda, and boiling water down the drain. Start by pouring the baking soda. Then add the vinegar slowly and you will see the solution fizzing.  This solution removes organic matter and kills eggs and larvae. Leave the solution to stay in the drain for one hour. Finally, pour boiling water down the drain. Using one sachet of Super Septic per month could also help mitigate the risk of having drain fly infestations too.
